Clear Acrylic Table Top Protectors: Which Thickness and How to Fit

A good dining table or desk takes years of daily use. Hot mugs, scratches from plates and cutlery, pen marks, craft supplies and the general wear of family life all take their toll. A clear acrylic table top protector sits over the surface and takes the punishment instead, while keeping the look of the wood, veneer or painted finish fully visible underneath.

It’s a straightforward solution, but the thickness you choose and how you fit it makes the difference between something that looks and feels right versus something that slides around, looks cheap or scratches within weeks.

Choosing the Right Thickness

For a table top protector that sits on a solid surface with support underneath, 5mm is the minimum we’d recommend. It’s rigid enough to lie flat without curling at the edges and heavy enough to stay put without fixings. This works well for dining tables, coffee tables and desks where the acrylic simply rests on top.

If you want something with more presence and weight, 6mm or 8mm gives a more substantial feel. Thicker sheets are less likely to shift when you’re writing on them or placing items down, and they feel noticeably more premium. For a large conference table or reception desk, 8mm or even 10mm creates a sleek, professional look.

We’d avoid anything thinner than 5mm for table use. 3mm and 4mm sheets tend to flex when picked up for cleaning and can bow slightly on larger tables, creating an uneven surface that’s more likely to trap crumbs underneath.

How to Measure

Measure the length and width of your table top in millimetres. For a protector that sits on top of the surface, you can match the exact table dimensions so the edges sit flush. Some people prefer the protector to be 5-10mm smaller on each side so it doesn’t overhang, especially on tables where people sit close to the edge. For glass-topped tables, matching the exact dimensions works best.

If your table has rounded corners, measure the corner radius. We can cut acrylic to match curved corners so the protector follows the shape of your table precisely. For unusual shapes like oval or circular tables, measure the widest points and let us know the shape when you order.

Keeping It in Place

The weight of a 5mm or thicker acrylic sheet is usually enough to keep it stationary on a table top. For extra grip, small clear rubber bumper pads stuck to the underside of each corner prevent any sliding without damaging the table surface. These are inexpensive, invisible from above and peel off cleanly if you ever remove the protector.

Avoid adhesive solutions. Taping or gluing the acrylic to the table risks damaging the finish underneath, and it makes cleaning a hassle.

Looking After Your Protector

Acrylic scratches more easily than glass, so a bit of care goes a long way. Always use coasters under hot drinks, as extreme heat can soften the surface. Wipe the protector down with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soapy water. Never use household glass cleaner, as many contain chemicals that cloud acrylic over time. For a detailed cleaning routine, see our guide to cleaning acrylic sheets.

If fine scratches appear after months of use, a dedicated acrylic polish will buff them out and restore the surface. It takes five minutes and the results are impressive.

Why Acrylic Over Glass

Glass table protectors do the same job, but they’re heavier, more expensive and far more dangerous if they break. Acrylic weighs roughly half as much, which matters when you’re lifting it off to clean the table underneath. It transmits slightly more light than glass, so the table surface looks just as good through acrylic as it would uncovered. And if someone drops something heavy on it, acrylic won’t shatter into sharp fragments across your dining room floor.
